Kerri delBarco Ungar, M.S. CCC-SLP, Lead Speech-Language Pathologist and Owner, has expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Kerri delBarco Ungar, M.S. CCC-SLP holds a specialized certification in the administration of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule 2 (ADOS-2), the preferred evaluation utilized in diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) within the medical community.

Language Assessment and Therapy

Speech Language Pathologists assess and treat children with delays in receptive language (comprehension), expressive language, social/ pragmatic language, reading comprehension, and written expression. Based upon a comprehensive evaluation, a differential diagnosis is made to determine the nature of the language delay or disorder. This results in an individualized treatment plan for a child targeting specific aspects of language development.

Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Disorders

Children may sometimes have challenges during mealtimes with eating different textures or consistencies, drinking, and swallowing. Speech language pathologists can help set up a feeding program that can guide families and caregivers towards which foods are appropriate or inappropriate for the child. Feeding therapy can help children eat and drink safely by modifying the texture of foods, positioning children in way that is safe for them during mealtime, and other specialized techniques designed for your child by his or her treating Speech Language Pathologist in our clinic.

Articulation/ Phonological Assessment and Therapy

Children with difficulty producing speech sounds come to therapy to work on specific sounds or patterns of sounds so that others can more clearly understand them in conversation.

Fluency Disorders

Dysfluency in young children occurs when a child frequently repeats parts of words, sounds of words, and whole words within a conversation. Children with dysfluencies often present with blocks or prolongations of sounds and words making it difficult for them to communicate with others. In severe cases of fluency disorders, physical concomitant behaviors are often present where a child may exhibit eye blinking, twitching, body movements, decreased eye contact, and other physical behaviors during dysfluent episodes. Speech Language Pathologists work with children by teaching them strategies to encourage “smooth” speech and to eliminate physical concomitant behaviors making their speech sound more natural and fluent.

Pragmatic Language Disorders

There are children who display difficulty using language effectively in social contexts. These children also have difficulty understanding non-verbal communication and abstract language (e.g. idioms, figurative language, inferences). Speech Language Pathologists target these social language delays or impairments in therapy helping children become more effective communicators with their peers and with adults.

Comprehension Deficits

Children who have difficulty understanding spoken language may have difficulty understanding word meanings (semantics), understanding complex grammatical structures, understanding linguistic concepts, understanding directions, sequencing, and with responding to comprehension questions. Children who exhibit listening comprehension deficits often have reading comprehension deficits as well.

Voice Therapy and Assessment

Children who have prolonged vocal hoarseness may need to seek therapy from a Speech Language Pathologist to assist in decreasing behaviors that can lead towards vocal hoarseness. The Speech Language Pathologist actively consults with the ENT (Otolaryngologist) to rule out any pathologies (growths that can appear on the vocal cords) and to obtain a prescription authorizing the Speech Language Pathologist to target good vocal hygiene techniques in therapy.

Oral Motor Disorders

Children sometimes may exhibit weak tongue and lip muscles which can impact the clarity of their speech. Oral muscle weakness can also affect the child’s ability to chew food properly. Speech Language Pathologists often target oral motor activities to assist in strengthening the oral muscles needed for speech and eating. In addition, some children have difficulty with motor planning tasks required for speech where the child’s brain has difficulty coordinating the complex oral movements needed to create sounds into syllables, syllables into words, and words into phrases. This difficulty is known as Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). Speech Language Pathologists target the motor planning skills needed in therapy to increase the child’s ability to effectively produce all speech consonants and consonant-vowel combinations.


